Thanksgiving Day

 

When is Thanksgiving Day and what does it celebrate?

On the fourth Thursday of November, people in the United States celebrate Thanksgiving, a national holiday honouring the early settlers and Native Americans who came together to have a historic harvest feast.

Thanksgiving was originally a holiday to give thanks to God for the harvest. Today it is an opportunity to give thanks for all the good things we have in our lives. It is also a day to celebrate family.

English Language Day - UN

 

Celebrating the English language at the UN (United Nations)

English Language Day at the UN is celebrated on 23 April, the date traditionally observed as both the birthday and date of death of William Shakespeare. 

Did you know?

There are 983 million people in the world who speak English, or 13% of the world's population.  It is estimated 372 million speak English as their first language, while 611 million speak English as a second language.

English is an international language used in areas such as education, health, tourism, business and entertainment.

What about you? What do you like about the English language? Why are you learning English?

International Thank You Day - 11th January

 

Every year, people all over the world celebrate International Thank You Day that falls on 11 th January. This celebration is the perfect opportunity to show your gratitude to the people who make your days what they are.

The origins of International Thank You Day are unclear. No one knows who established it and when. There is an theory that greeting card companies promoted this holiday to increase their sales. But this doesn't make the concept of International Thank You Day less appealing.

Celebrate this day by showing your appreciation to all the people who make your life better and more beautiful. One single word can make people around you happier, isn't it great?

Unfortunately, we often forget to express our gratitude to others. We only think about ourselves and don't notice all the things that relatives and friends do for us. Be polite, think of others, and a simple “thank you” will make their day better.

This day is considered to be one of the most polite days. But don't forget to thank all people who deserve it during the rest of the year.

Milk and cookies are out,

Kids are tucked in tight.

There’s so much to do

On Christmas Eve night!

And dream of the next day,

Don’t forget some food

For the friends who pull the sleigh!

National Ugly Sweater Day – December 18, 2020

 

National Ugly Sweater Day is celebrated on the third Friday of December. This year it lands on December 18 (today). 

The first “official” ugly sweater day was in 2002 in Vancouver, Canada. The hosts threw the party to raise money for their friend’s cancer treatment.

Ugly sweater means, well, a sweater that is ugly! And Christmas sweaters are notorious for winning in the ugly category (decked out with lights, pictures of Santa, and maybe a few awful puns). 

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL UGLY SWEATER DAY

1.   It’s the one day we can wear something ugly and it actually be “cool”

Let’s face it, if you waltz into work on any other day wearing an “ugly sweater”, you would be the laughing stock of the water cooler. Save that ugly sweater for National Ugly Sweater Day and well, you’re the man (or woman) of the hour.

2.   They’re incredibly warm and cozy

Say what you want about ugly sweaters, but the one thing you can’t deny is their incredible warmth and coziness. Wearing one on makes you want to throw on a pair of fuzzy socks and curl up by a fire; hot chocolate included. Best part? This feeling lasts all day!

3.   There’s an ugly sweater for everyone

With the ugly sweater industry booming, there’s no better time to hop on the ugly sweater trend than now. From brand new, to do-it-yourself, to second-hand hidden gems, there’s an ugly sweater for every person and every personality. You just have to find it!

Guy Fawkes Day / Bonfire Night

 

"Remember, remember, the 5th of November

The gunpowder, treason and plot;

I know of no reason, why the gunpowder treason

Should ever be forgot."

In Britain, 5^th November is Bonfire Night, the anniversary of a plot to kill the king.

On that day in 1605 a man called Guy Fawkes was part of a plan to blow up the English parliament, but he was discovered and didn't succeed. To celebrate this day, people usually go to a fireworks display and burn a model of Guy Fawkes on a big fire!
